PercipEnz Technologies was ranked no. 2,562 on the "Inc. Magazine" fourth annual exclusive list of America’s fastest-growing private companies—the Inc. 5000.

NEW YORK, August 24, 2010 — Inc. magazine today ranked PercipEnz Technologies No. 2562 on its fourth annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Music website Pandora, convenience store chain 7-Eleven, Brooklyn Brewery, and Radio Flyer, maker of the iconic children’s red wagon, are among the prominent brands featured on this year’s list.

“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.”

PercipEnz was the only honoree from Wisconsin in the Software category. Overall, PercipEnz ranked 164th out of a total of 272 companies in this category. There were 61 companies on the Inc. 5000 list from Wisconsin. Among its neighbors, PercipEnz ranked 16th with a three-year growth rate of 92%.

PercipEnz Technologies, Inc. has had a banner year receiving three other awards in 2010 in recognition of the company’s success, viability, workplace environment, and community involvement. These were the Wisconsin Company to Watch award, the Dane County Small Business Awards, and the BioForward Emerging Company Showcase recognition.

The 2010 Inc. 5000, unveiled today on Inc.com, serves as a unique illustration of the profound changes taking place in the U.S. economy. The Government Services sector showed the biggest gain in terms of the number of companies on the list, up 33 percent from last year to 335 companies. Government Services was also the second-fastest-growing sector in terms of median revenue growth, posting a 202 percent gain over the 2006-2009 measuring period. More than half of these companies are based in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The fastest-growing sector by median revenue growth was Real Estate, now just a tiny group of 38 young, small companies, which showed 231 percent median growth over the period. (There were 121 Real Estate firms on the inaugural Inc. 5000 in 2007.) Business Products & Services is the top industry by number of companies on the list (640) and total revenue ($80.7 billion), while Health is the biggest by total employment (287,726 jobs).

Despite the fact that most of this year’s measuring period of 2006-2009 took place during the latest recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $321.6 billion, up more than 50 percent from last year. The effects of the recession are seen, however, in the median three-year growth rate, which dropped to 96 percent from last year’s 126 percent. This year’s Inc. 5000 employ a record 1.4 million people, up from one million on last year’s list. With unemployment remaining stubbornly high, policymakers and business leaders will do well to look to the Inc. 5000 companies for fresh ideas on achieving growth and creating jobs.

Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found on www.inc.com/5000.

Methodology

The 2010 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2006 to 2009. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by June 30, 2006. Additionally, they had to be based in the United States, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2009. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2006 is $80,000; the minimum for 2009 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons. The top 10 percent of companies on the list constitute the Inc. 500, now in its 29th year.

The DCSBA celebrates small businesses and the contributions they make to the region’s communities and economy. The award is given to the businesses, including all of the employees, not just the owners.

For nearly three decades, the DCSBA has been honoring small businesses at a breakfast celebration, attracting approximately 250 people, including city and county leaders. “Innovation in Tough Times” was the theme of this year’s event which was emceed by Jody Glynn Patrick, publisher of InBusiness Magazine. Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk gave opening comments and Robert Jordan, Founder and CTO of Idle Free Systems, Inc. gave the Keynote address.

Criteria for the award call for businesses with less than $15 million in annual revenue, are viable and successful, have been in business for at least three years, maintain a responsible and rewarding workplace environment, and give back to the Dane County community through volunteerism, contributions, or in-kind services.

“The awards have grown nicely in terms of the number of companies nominated, those returning questionnaires, and the number of attendees each year,” said Neil Lerner, director of the University of Wisconsin Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which is one of the key collaborators who put on the event. In a typical year, about 70 nominations are received.

When receiving the award on behalf of PercipEnz, Srini Kalluri, PercipEnz founder, president, and CEO compared the first ten years of building the company to a bus ride. “If the people on the bus are only interested in the destination, then they won’t stay on it when it changes direction. Along the way we have had to make adjustments and change course, but the people of PercipEnz are dedicated and they stuck with it. That is what makes us a terrific company with a phenomenal culture.”

Kalluri also credited PercipEnz’s culture with its 100 percent customer retention rate. “In the ten years that we have been in business, we have never lost an existing customer,” he said.

Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Madison, PercipEnz develops enterprise-class clinical and translational research management software. The company’s flagship product, the OnCore® informatics system, is the United State’s most widely adopted clinical research platform among academic research organizations and cancer centers.

Sponsors of the Dane County Small Business Awards include: Centro Hispano, Chase, Madison Gas & Electric Co., InBusiness Magazine, Mid-West Family Broadcasting, University of Wisconsin Small Business Development Center, Urban League of Greater Madison and Wisconsin Business Development Finance Corporation.

An extensive search for an integrated clinical research management system came to an end in February when Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) selected the OnCore(r) system.

MADISON, Wis. (May 20, 2010) – An extensive search for an integrated clinical research management system came to an end in February when Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) selected the OnCore(r) system.

“At some level, we’ve been looking for a product over a decade,” said Jeffrey W. Clark, MD, Medical Director of Clinical Trials Operations at DF/HCC, and one of the people who helped spearhead the search for a new system. Unfortunately, a system that was sophisticated enough to handle the complexity of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center’s seven-institution consortium did not exist until recently.

“In many ways, we had gone as far as we could in improving the operation. What was really missing were the integrated systems that would give us the automation, information, and management decision making tools to take our clinical trials program to the next level,” said Beverly Ginsburg-Cooper, MBA, Associate Director for Administration at DF/HCC and Senior VP for Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, who coordinated the Cancer Center’s formal effort to evaluate systems this past year.

Currently, DF/HCC uses informatics to support its clinical research operation. However, these systems are not fully integrated and there are opportunities to eliminate the duplication of effort and enhance the flow of data.

“We’re honored to be working with Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center,” said Srini Kalluri, President & CEO of PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., the creator of OnCore. “Over the past ten years, not only has OnCore evolved to address the complex needs of large clinical research enterprises like Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, but also, PercipEnz has achieved an organizational maturity in terms of processes and people to be able to undertake such large implementations. We are pleased to see the high caliber team DF/HCC has dedicated to their OnCore implementation, and we are quite confident that, working collaboratively with this outstanding group of people, we can ensure a highly successful implementation.”

DF/HCC is comprised of seven separate independent institutions that function as a cohesive consortium. The center has a unified clinical trials structure with a single IRB, a single Protocol Review and Monitoring System, a single Data Safety and Monitoring Process, a single set of operating policies and procedures, and a centralized clinical trials infrastructure to support these functions. Additionally, the center has coordinated budgeting and contracting processes. But, each institution coordinates its own data management activities independently.
Immediately, the goal is to start using OnCore for all of the centralized administrative functions at DF/HCC. Additionally, there are several existing systems in place at the center that are under consideration for direct integration with OnCore. DF/HCC will also be identifying any critical functionality they would like to see added to OnCore.

Working Together to Improve Cancer Research and Care

PercipEnz’s reputation for service and responsiveness played a role in DF/HCC’s final decision to select the OnCore product. “Beyond any existing differences in features and functionality among the various systems we evaluated, service and the OnCore user community were a compelling factor in our decision,” said Ginsburg-Cooper.

The implementation of OnCore was kicked-off earlier this month at DF/HCC, and the center has already started participating in user community events and activities through Onsemble, a community comprised of OnCore users and others concerned with improving clinical research operations.

“With one of the largest Bone Marrow Transplant programs in the country, it is a priority and responsibility of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center to work together with the other cancer centers to develop a product that will benefit us all,” said Ginsburg-Cooper.

“In the end, we are all here to help people with cancer, and 30 different research centers should not have to reinvent the wheel over and over again,” said Clark.

About the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center

Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) is the largest NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, bringing together the cancer research efforts of seven member institutions: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Boston, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and Massachusetts General Hospital.

DF/HCC has joined these seven renowned Harvard-affiliated institutions into one collective force dedicated to the fight against cancer. Based in Boston, DF/HCC consists of more than 1,000 researchers with a singular goal — to find new and innovative ways to combat cancer.

When the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center decided to enhance their clinical research infrastructure, comprehensive functionality and a reputation for customer service contributed to their decision to select the OnCore(r) clinical research management system in December.

MADISON, Wis. (April 21, 2010) – When the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center decided to enhance their clinical research infrastructure, comprehensive functionality and a reputation for customer service contributed to their decision to select the OnCore(r) clinical research management system from PercipEnz Technologies, Inc. in December.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center Selects OnCore

By replacing a system that had been created and maintained in-house over the last 25 years, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center believes the transition to OnCore will contribute to key strategic priorities for the center. These goals include centralizing clinical trials operations, cost containment, enhanced ability to comply with regulatory guidelines, and demonstrating compatibility with the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (NCI’s caBIG™) program.

“As clinical trials work has required more specialized personnel, the cost benefits of becoming more centralized have become apparent,” said Michael Bertram, PhD, Associate Director for Administration, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. “OnCore will help us bring everyone under one umbrella.”

“It is certainly a pleasure to welcome UAB to the OnCore community,” said Srini Kalluri, president and CEO of PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., the creator of OnCore. “They are a very focused and energetic group. We look forward to a successful implementation and many years of collaboration.”

The center has begun implementation according to the standard OnCore implementation plan and all of the center’s research groups will begin using the system right away.

Bertram also expects the new system to improve the center’s ability to comply with regulatory guidelines. As part of this effort, the center has elected to use the Electronic Protocol Review and Monitoring System (ePRMS), a module in OnCore that provides committee and workflow management for the scientific review process prior to activation of a new clinical trial.

During the center’s search for a new system, Bertram consulted with his peers at other cancer centers. “OnCore was highly recommended by other cancer center administrators and clinical trial personnel,” said Bertram. “PercipEnz’s reputation for customer service is excellent.”

As an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, compatibility with NCI’s caBIG™ program was a requirement for the new system. OnCore received caBIG Bronze compatibility certification in April, 2008. The certification is based on compliance with guidelines set by NCI’s caBIG™ program, the objective of which is to provide a framework to both access and use data from remote data resources with the ultimate goal of creating greater transparency and efficiency for cancer clinical research operations.

“We’re excited about rolling-out the new system and to be participating in the user community,” said Bertram.

About the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center

One of the nation’s leading cancer research and treatment centers, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center located in a six-state area that includes Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina and Georgia. UAB’s cancer services are routinely recognized as being among the nation’s best.

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is home to an outstanding faculty of more than 330 physicians and researchers, many of whom are internationally and nationally recognized for their expertise in oncology. The center treats an estimated 5,000 new patients each year.

e-Cycling is an updated strategy for keeping electronics out of landfills and incinerators where businesses repurpose computers for educational use. Technical partnerships and donations of repurposed computers are benefiting students, staff and administrators while also keeping monitors, hard drives and printers out of our local landfills.

Leadership in Action

PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., a Madison-based, developer of enterprise-class clinical and translational research management software joined the MMSD e-cycling team in 2009.

“We’re so excited to have adopted this new policy. It was a truly rewarding experience to deliver our first donation of four computers knowing that those would go into immediate service for the school district,” said Srini Kalluri, PercipEnz President & CEO.

Currently, computers in the MMSD are, on average, nine years old when they are replaced. Most businesses will obsolete their inventory of computer equipment at about four years. “This new policy makes it easy for businesses to contribute to the community as part of their normal business processes,” said Kalluri.

Interested corporate donors can visit www.MadisonCATS.org to learn more and make a pledge to implement e-Cycling policies at their companies.

As part of Madison Metropolitan School District’s Earth Day 40 event at PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., First Lady Jessica Doyle challenges business and community leaders to join the District in establishing e-Cycling policies for computers that support student learning.

Company representatives interested in joining us at the event may contact Kerri Phillips by email at kphillips@percipenz.com or by phone at (608) 826-6000.

e-Cycling is an updated strategy for keeping electronics out of landfills and incinerators where businesses repurpose computers for educational use. In 1970, Wisconsin’s own U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day to bring environmental issues to the national agenda. The annual celebration has evolved to reflect the challenges of our time.

“In today’s tight budgetary environment and with increasing pressure to reduce property taxes, this situation presents an obvious and natural opportunity to repurpose technological hardware for the benefit of the school districts. Not only does such a program strengthen ties between the school district and the community, but it also saves tax payer dollars and reduces the burden on landfills,” said Kalluri.

In addition to donating used computers to the MMSD, PercipEnz is also planning to donate the time and experience of their employees to this program.

A Simple Process

Corporate donors can call the MMSD Technical Services HelpLine at 608-663-5853; ask about donating equipment and a MMSD technical team member will work with businesses to establish a customized plan for donation.

As of March 21, 2010, MMSD will accept donated equipment with the following minimum configuration:

PCs

2.0 GHz Pentium/Celeron/Athlon/Atom processor

1.0 GB RAM

Internal IDE CD-ROM

10/100 NIC installed

Preferred but not required:

Monitor: 17″+ flat panel

Brand: Dell or Lenovo/IBM

Other Equipment

Laser printers (networked preferred)

DLP or LCD data projectors (2000+ lumen)

Document Cameras

Student Response Devices

Interactive Whiteboards (brand: Smart or Promethean)

Due to disposal costs, the district cannot accept equipment that does not meet the minimum standards or that is not approved by MMSD Technical Services prior to pick-up or delivery.

This year’s release of the OnCore Clinical and Translational Research Software, Version 10.0, represents thousands of hours of development effort and incorporates work done in eight collaborative projects with research organizations around the country.

MADISON, Wis. (April 5, 2010) — This year’s release of the OnCore Clinical and Translational Research Software, Version 10.0, represents thousands of hours of development effort and incorporates work done in eight collaborative projects with research organizations around the country.

“Of course we’re continuously working to improve OnCore and every new version we release reflects that,” said Anthony O’Hare, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer at PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., creators of OnCore. “What we’re especially excited about with this version is bringing together the work that has been going on in several collaborative initiatives and making it available to all the OnCore centers.”

Much of the new functionality being rolled out with Version 10.0 was previously only available to those research centers who were participating in specific collaborative initiatives. OnCore product development is heavily guided by these projects in which dedicated individuals from various centers devote their time and energy into planning, implementing and evaluating new functionality. One such project focuses on study financials management.

“Control of, and access to, real-time financials data continues to be top of mind for our centers,” said O’Hare. “We devoted an entire team of developers to refining this functionality and delivering more tools for Version 10.0.”

Removing barriers was another key focus in OnCore’s development over the past year. New functionality in OnCore includes support for multi-center trials, a new Affiliate Network Administration portal, enhanced communication and reporting tools, and additions to the OnCore Software Developers Toolkit (SDK) for integration with other systems such as those for electronic IRB management.

But not all of the enhancements in OnCore Version 10.0 are about new functionality.

“OnCore is a mature product – it has been around for 10 years, after all. Because of this, we’re able to pay attention to some of the finer points, too,” said Srini Kalluri, President & CEO of PercipEnz. “I think OnCore users are going to appreciate all of the enhancements around personalization, workflow, and streamlining data entry that went into this version.”

The OnCore platform is the product of PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., a software development company specializing in clinical and translational research informatics for midsized to large organizations. The nation’s most widely adopted clinical trials management system (CTMS) among academic research organizations and cancer centers, the OnCore platform is the result of a decade of experience working closely with large research organizations, including many world-class NCI designated cancer centers and institutes funded by the National Institute of Health’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) program.

OnCore-CRM offers a comprehensive set of modules for managing all aspects of clinical research:

PercipEnz is proud to be able to support two innovative organizations with sponsorships for events this week.

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is hosting the first annual AMIA Summit on Clinical Research Informatics (CRI Summit) on March 12-13, in San Francisco. The CRI Summit will be a great venue to share work, develop new collaborations, and identify potential avenues of research and development that will ultimately advance discovery-driven healthcare. Organizers strongly encourage active participation in this new Summit from biomedical informatics professionals, clinicians, clinical investigators, information and communication technologists, computer scientists, community and public health scientists, developers, and anyone else working to advance clinical research, translational research, and drive discovery-directed healthcare.

Next, the Spring 2010 meeting of the Cancer Center Administrators Forum (CCAF) is being held in New York on March 14-16. To recognize the diversity of the host city, they have a panel of resident experts to present programs and issues on Health Care Disparities in Urban Environments. The program also includes reports on progress to date and hot issues in clinical trials reporting, new initiatives from the Cancer Centers Branch, highlights on health care reform and other political initiatives with Harry Holmes, a discussion with David Maslow, PhD, around the new NIH scoring system, colleagues will present pros/cons on systems to manage core facilities, and the semi-annual report on the NCI grants portfolio with Leo Buscher.

MADISON, Wis. (March 5, 2010) — PercipEnz Technologies, Inc. has been recognized as one of the thirty 2010 “Wisconsin Companies to Watch,” an awards program presented by the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Network (WEN) with support from the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and the Division of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (DEED) at the University of Wisconsin-Extension in association with the Edward Lowe Foundation.

PercipEnz will be honored at an awards ceremony during the inaugural Wisconsin Companies to Watch gala on April 13, 2010, at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison.

Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Madison, PercipEnz develops enterprise-class clinical and translational research management software. The company’s flagship product, the OnCore® informatics system, is the United State’s most widely adopted clinical research platform among academic research organizations and cancer centers.

“We’re honored to be receiving this award and joining this group of fantastic companies throughout the state. This recognition comes at a very exciting time in our company’s history as we just celebrated our 10th anniversary. We look forward to continuing to grow and contribute to the success of Wisconsin in the future,” said Srini Kalluri, president & CEO of PercipEnz.

“I’m pleased that we could join the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Network in recognizing these dynamic, innovative companies,” said Commerce Secretary Richard J. Leinenkugel. “I’m confident that we will be watching and benefiting from their achievements in the years to come.”

“CTW recognizes companies at the crucial stage of growth where financial potential, concept and management have been established, and attracting talented workers, solid vendor relationships and access to peer learning are key components of future growth,” added Gayle Kugler. The Edward Lowe Foundation’s studies have shown second-stage companies are the ones who generate jobs and economic growth in their communities.

Companies making it to the Wisconsin Companies to Watch list are a remarkable group of second-stage companies. Defined as having 6 to 99 full-time-equivalent employees and generating $750,000 to $50 million in annual revenue or working capital from investors or grants, these companies form the back-bone of Wisconsin’s economy. Representing all regions of the state and a diverse range of industries, companies like PercipEnz are known for their exceptional entrepreneurial leadership, creation of innovation or use of innovation in creative ways, and their sustainable competitive advantage.

During 2005-2007, Wisconsin’s resident companies averaged more than 33,500 second-stage establishments, according to YourEconomy.org, an online resource of the Edward Lowe Foundation. Those second-stage companies employed more than 800,000 workers (that’s 36.7 percent of the jobs created by companies headquartered in the state).

Winners were selected by judges from the banking, economic development, entrepreneurial and angel communities.

Wisconsin Companies to Watch is presented by the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Network (WEN) with support from the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and the Division of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (DEED) at the University of Wisconsin-Extension in association with the Edward Lowe Foundation.

Support for Wisconsin Companies to Watch is generously provided by the Wisconsin SBDC Network, Madison Gas and Electric, Kenosha Area Business Association, Thrive and Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren SC. Additional services are provided by Wisconsin Economic Development Association and BioForward.
